Local notes · Pernem taluka
Seating at a Mandrem resort spends half its life outdoors, or near enough: on verandas, in open lounges, under a roof with no walls. Indoor upholstery does not survive that. Use outdoor-grade fabric on a seasoned hardwood frame with webbing in place of steel springs, which rust in the salt breeze. Covers should unzip for washing, with a spare set so a sofa is never out of use, and the foam should be firm enough not to sag after a season of guests. Near the creek, lift the seat clear of the floor on tall legs, so air moves beneath it. Reupholstering a tired sofa before November is often all a guest house needs.
Mandrem is a quiet beach village in Pernem, where a creek runs behind the sand and is crossed by small bamboo bridges. It is known for yoga retreats and wellness resorts, with a village of old houses set back among the palms.
Stays here are retreats, small resorts and houses let for the season. The style is calm and simple, with a lot of outdoor living space.
The creek makes Mandrem humid and brings mosquitoes; the beach side is salty and breezy. The season runs from about November to April.
Sea air is hard on sofas: metal legs and springs rust, and natural fabrics hold damp. Choose a seasoned hardwood frame, rust-proofed or webbing suspension, and a tightly woven synthetic or outdoor-grade fabric. Leather needs conditioning to stop it cracking in salt air.
In a damp room, foam and fabric can turn musty. Raise the sofa on legs so air passes underneath, choose removable covers that can be washed, and keep it a little away from outside walls.
Mandrem is about ninety-five minutes from the showroom. We measure free of charge on a planned Pernem day.
Plain, washable curtains in calm colours, bamboo blinds for open-sided spaces, and mosquito nets on room windows near the creek.
Yes. Bamboo blinds give shade and privacy, and clear PVC blinds keep rain out. Both roll up when not needed.
