Carved wooden sofas and chairs are still found in Benaulim's old houses, passed down with the house, and they are better made than most things that could replace them. Restoring one means new webbing, new foam and new fabric, with the carving left exactly as it is. In the humid village centre choose a cover that breathes and can come off for washing. Villas nearer the beach need a different sofa: a seasoned hardwood frame, rust-proofed or webbing suspension, and a tight synthetic or outdoor-grade fabric, because salt air rusts springs and natural cloth holds damp. Beside a pool, performance fabric copes with wet swimmers.
Benaulim is a large village just south of Colva, with a long, quieter beach and a village centre around Maria Hall. It has many old family houses, the hilltop church of St John the Baptist at Monte, and newer villas and holiday apartments along the lanes that lead to the beach.
Benaulim is known for its old houses: deep balcões, carved wooden furniture and windows with oyster-shell or wooden shutters. Many have been restored by their families or by new owners. Beside them are modern villas with pools, which want a different look altogether.
The beach side is salty and breezy. The village centre, a kilometre or two inland, is more sheltered but humid, and old lime-plastered walls there show damp in the monsoon.
Sea air is hard on sofas: metal legs and springs rust, and natural fabrics hold damp. Choose a seasoned hardwood frame, rust-proofed or webbing suspension, and a tightly woven synthetic or outdoor-grade fabric. Leather needs conditioning to stop it cracking in salt air.
Many old houses still have their carved rosewood or teak sofas. These frames are worth restoring more than once: new webbing, foam and fabric bring them back for far less than a new sofa of the same quality.

Only on a dry wall. Old lime walls often hold damp, so we test first and usually suggest papering a newer partition wall.
